As part of Men’s Health Month, influential Black Male Health Advocates will Host #BrothersWhoTweet, a Twitter chat series focusing on Black Gay Men and their allies. Subjects will include sex, sexual health, mental stress, exercise and much more. The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
African American men are disproportionately affected by health disparities, a fact that has remains since disparities have been recorded. From heart health, sexual health to mentl health, Black males across the lifespan experience higher morbidity and mortality. Specifically, the Centers for Disease control (CDC) says HIV/AIDS, prostate cancer, heart disease, obesity and homicide claim more lives of Black men than their White counterparts.
Twitter is especially popular among younger African Americans. Overall, 73% of African American internet users–and 96% of those ages 18-29–use a social networking site of some kind. African Americans have exhibited relatively high levels of Twitter use since we began tracking the service as a stand-alone platform, and this co9rti9jues to be the case–22% of online Blacks are Twitter users, compared with 16% of online Whites, per Pew Research.
community health leaders and subject-matter experts representing the mid-west, south, and the east coast are partnering to facilitate a social media event on Twitter. Experts will talk about and answer inquiries to promote sexual health, mental health, and fitness, potentially reaching more that 500,000 Black males.
